In the INEGI report, the industry showed a 27.5% drop in production, while exports fell 23.9%.
Mexico's production, exports, and wholesale and retail domestic sales of heavy vehicles declined in February as a result of the international uncertainty surrounding tariffs and the economic slowdown in the United States.
According to information from the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers (ANPACT) and the Mexican Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA), truck production and exports during February 2025 are at their lowest level in the last three years, after having been recovering, especially due to the supply to the United States market. Meanwhile, domestic sales are suffering from the slowdown in supply.
In the INEGI report on heavy vehicles, the industry showed a 27.5% drop in Mexican production during the second month of the year, with 13,629 units assembled, compared to 18,792 vehicles in February 2024.
Meanwhile, exports fell 23.9%, with 11,535 units shipped worldwide, compared to the 15,167 trucks reported in the same month the previous year.
Wholesale truck sales also decreased 44.5%, totaling 2,526 units; meanwhile, retail sales fell 18.5%, with 3,772 units compared to 4,630 in February 2024. However, the recorded level is 18.4% higher than the same month in 2019.
ANPACT President Rogelio Arzate said that “as a heavy vehicle automotive industry established in Mexico, we trust that the actions undertaken by the Mexican government will serve to resolve this situation. Officials from both countries have taken into consideration the impacts that this measure would have on all industries and on consumers.”
Federal authorities headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum and Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard “have taken the right steps to ensure that, through dialogue and conciliation, the imposition of extraordinary tariffs on Mexico can be postponed, and we trust that tariffs will not be introduced either now or on April 2, since trade has been beneficial for both nations and is regulated within the framework of the T-MEC, which has provided certainty, transparency, and clarity in foreign trade operations.”
