The news of the award-winning literary figure's death was announced by his son, Álvaro Vargas Llosa, through social media.

Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, died today in Lima at the age of 89.

The award-winning man of letters departed this world in peace and surrounded by his loved ones, his son Álvaro Vargas Llosa stated on social media.

He also shared a letter signed by him and his siblings, Morgana and Gonzalo, in which they indicated that no public ceremony would take place to bid him farewell, in accordance with the instructions of the celebrated writer born in Arequipa.

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce that our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, passed away today in Lima, surrounded by his family and in peace," the published statement begins.

"His passing will sadden his relatives, his friends, and his readers around the world, but we hope they will find solace, as we did, in the fact that he enjoyed a long, varied, and fruitful life, and leaves behind a body of work that will outlive him," the letter adds.

The children also indicate that their mother, Patricia Llosa, and the writer's grandchildren hope to have the space and privacy to say goodbye to him with their family and close friends.

"His remains, as was his will, will be cremated," stated the children of the 2010 Nobel Prize winner in Literature.

"We will proceed in the coming hours and days according to your instructions. No public ceremony will take place," concludes the letter signed by the Vargas Llosa brothers.

The letter was also shared by his daughter Morgana, who reiterated the deep sorrow that the passing of the author of works such as Conversation in the Cathedral and The City and the Dogs has caused her family.
