The president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, denounced "irregular mobilizations of some army units" on Wednesday in a post on X, while armed forces were seen meeting in La Paz, according to videos shared on social networks.
Heavily armed soldiers and armored vehicles were seen arriving at the central Plaza Murillo in La Paz, according to the videos released.
"Democracy must be respected," Arce added in his X account.
The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) condemned the events in Bolivia and called on the Army to respect the legitimately elected Government.
"The international community, the OAS and the General Secretariat will not tolerate any breach of the legitimate constitutional order in Bolivia or anywhere else," said OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro on his X account.
Former President Evo Morales, who has publicly broken with Arce although both belong to the same socialist movement, announced a national mobilization of his followers in a separate publication in X.
"I ask the people with a democratic vocation to defend the Homeland from some military groups that act against democracy and the people," said the former president.
The military mobilization was also criticized by former conservative president Jeanine Añez, Arce's political rival.
