Even so, Trump claims that they did meet this morning.
The Chinese government denied on Thursday that talks are underway with the United States regarding their tariff dispute, calling it "false information," after US President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that there are "daily" contacts between the two countries.
"As far as I know, China and the United States have not held any consultations or negotiations on the tariff issue, let alone reached an agreement," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, according to the Chinese newspaper Global Times.
He also reiterated that the situation stems from the actions of the United States and emphasized that Beijing's position "is consistent and clear." "We will fight if we have to. Our door is open if the United States wants to talk. Dialogue and negotiation must be equal, respectful, and reciprocal," he concluded.
Guo's comments came after Trump said officials from both countries are holding direct talks "every day" on trade, without elaborating. He expressed his willingness on Tuesday to "be very good" to China and seek ways to "work together," which would allow tariffs on Chinese goods to be lowered "substantially," though not to zero.
However, the US president insisted today that both powers remain in contact to address the trade conflict. "It doesn't matter who 'they' are."
We may reveal it later, but they had meetings this morning, and we met with China," Trump told reporters, as reported by The Guardian.
