Purchases from this Asian country represented 32.5% of total purchases from abroad in the last year, worth US$ 5,183 million, according to the foreign trade report of the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP).
As of December 2024, China was the main country of origin of Paraguay's imports, with a 32.5% share, equivalent to US$ 5,183.1 million, showing an increase of 1.4% compared to the accumulated figure as of December 2023.
Paraguay's total imports reached US$16.379 billion in the last year, according to official foreign trade records from the Central Bank of Paraguay.
According to the official report, cell phone imports represent 20% of total purchases made from China in the last year for a total of US$ 1.027 billion, an amount 36% lower than last year's US$ 1.606 billion, according to the data.
Around 7 million cell phones are imported each year, most of which are re-exported to neighboring countries (almost 90%), mainly to Brazil.
Data processing machines worth US$361 million were also imported, which also registered a decrease of 4.2% compared to 2023, and accounted for 7% of the total products imported from China.
Another item with high demand in this market is tires, which were purchased for a total of US$ 242.5 million.
OTHER MARKETS WITH LARGE SHARE, IN ADDITION TO CHINA
Brazil is in second place, with a share of 24.7%, with imports from that country amounting to US$ 3,943.0 million. This represented an increase of 6.2% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The main products imported from this source were mineral fertilizers worth US$ 179 million, malt beer for US$ 130 million and automobiles for US$ 126 million.
The United States is in third place, with an 8.07% share of total imports. The value of imports amounted to US$ 1.279 billion and registered a 10% decrease compared to the same period last year.
The main products included diesel, mineral fertilizers and passenger vehicles.
According to data from the BCP, more than 70% of imports made by our country come from these four countries: China, Brazil, the United States and Argentina.
Another important market for the country is the European Union, from where goods worth US$ 1.153 billion were imported in the last year, according to the official report of the BCP.
