The Mexican president expressed her rejection this Wednesday of the economic sanctions announced by United States President Donald Trump against countries that purchase oil from Venezuela.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her rejection this Wednesday of the economic sanctions announced by United States President Donald Trump against countries that purchase oil from Venezuela.

During her morning press conference, the president reiterated that Mexican foreign policy is based on the principle of non-intervention and self-determination of peoples.

"We do not agree with imposing economic sanctions on countries. That is a principle of Mexican foreign policy, not only of the government I represent, but in general," Sheinbaum Pardo stated.

The Mexican president emphasized that the Mexican Constitution establishes this position and stressed that these types of measures affect not only governments but entire populations.

In this regard, he recalled that Mexico has historically maintained its opposition to the economic blockade imposed on Cuba, a position it will continue to defend.

The president also noted that the way to resolve international differences must be through diplomacy and dialogue, not the imposition of coercive measures.

ENERGY POLICY FOCUSED ON DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

In her remarks, Sheinbaum Pardo explained that her administration's energy strategy prioritizes domestic consumption of Mexican oil rather than exports. She explained that in the past, Mexico relied heavily on crude oil sales, but her government seeks to maintain stable production.

"Today, our goal is to maintain production of 1.8 million barrels per day throughout the six-year term, and to refine that oil in our own refineries and use it for the gasoline Mexico needs, for the diesel Mexico needs," he explained.

She also criticized the policies of previous administrations, particularly those of Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón, who, she said, overexploited oil fields, especially Cantarell. "Cantarell, which is the great field that gave so much to Mexico, must be exploited rationally so that it provides more oil for longer. But during Fox's time, 3.2 million barrels of oil were produced daily, mainly for export to the US," she said from the National Palace.
