Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Tuesday called for keeping a "cool head" and not being guided by the "isolated phrases" of her US counterpart, Donald Trump, who the day before said that the 25 percent tariffs would be applied as planned once the moratorium ends on March 4.
"We have to review everything that President Trump says, that's why I always say that we have to keep a cool head and not take isolated phrases," said the Mexican president at her usual morning press conference.
Sheinbaum is confident that Mexico and the United States will reach an agreement before the end of the "suspension period" that was agreed upon amid Trump's tariff threats, without even ruling out a call between the two leaders.
The president explained that Trump's statements refer to reciprocity between tariffs and that in the case of Mexico there are no tariffs on American products. "We would remain as we are now," she said.
"We are continuing to hold talks with them on the issue of security and trade. We have to close the agreement, but we have to listen to the entire statement. We must not cut out the part where it speaks only about Mexico and Canada," he said.
The day before, during a joint press conference at the White House with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump said that "tariffs are going ahead, on time, and on schedule," accusing Mexico and Canada, as well as "many other countries" of having "mistreated" the United States.
"This is an abuse that occurred over many, many years, and I don't even blame those other countries, I blame our leaders for allowing it to happen," he said.
A month ago, Trump suspended for at least one month the 25 percent tariffs on exports that he had threatened Mexico and Canada with if they did not comply with a series of requirements, especially those related to security.
Sheinbaum sent a contingent of some 10,000 soldiers to the common border to stop drug trafficking to the United States, the destination of more than 80 percent of its exports. In exchange, Trump promised to strengthen the fight against arms trafficking to Mexico.
