"That's good for the country," said the Mexican president at her regular "Mañanera del Pueblo" press conference.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described this Thursday morning as "good" for Mexico that U.S. President Donald Trump did not apply reciprocal tariffs as he did with dozens of other nations.
"That's good for the country," Sheinbaum said at her regular "Mañanera del Pueblo" press conference, explaining that the decision is due to "the good relationship" her government has built with the Trump administration.
Although he asserted that his government must continue talks with the neighboring nation regarding the pending tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
For his part, Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said that the Mexican government will seek "in the next 40 days" the best conditions for customs duties on these three sectors of the economy.
Sheinbaum Pardo announced that she will announce the National Economic Strengthening Plan at noon this Thursday. "Governors, legislators, and business leaders will be there," the president assured.
Upon returning to the White House in January, Trump threatened Mexico and Canada with 25% tariffs in retaliation for allegedly allowing drug trafficking and undocumented migrants into their territory.
These tariffs went into effect in Mexico for all goods not covered by the free trade agreement's rules. Therefore, the Mexican president said she will seek to encourage all companies to "export within the USMCA."
According to analysts' estimates, around 50% of Mexican exports fall under the USMCA framework.
