Latin American M&A market falls 24% between January and July 2024

During this period, 1,497 transactions were recorded for an amount of US$ 39,226 million.

The Latin American transactional market has registered a total of 1,497 mergers and acquisitions, both announced and closed, for an aggregate value of US$ 39,226 million, according to the most recent report by TTR Data and Datasite.

These figures represent a 24% decrease in the number of transactions and an 18% decrease in their value compared to July 2023.

In July, a total of 176 mergers and acquisitions were recorded, both announced and closed, for an aggregate amount of US$ 2.806 billion.

CROSS-BORDER SCOPE

As regards the cross-border market, until July 2023, Mexican companies have mainly invested in the United States and Spain, with 11 and 10 transactions, respectively. In terms of value, Spain stands out, with US$ 153 million.

On the other hand, the United States is the country that has invested the most in making acquisitions in Mexico, with 52 transactions. In terms of value, the United States also stands out, with US$ 786 million.

PRIVATE EQUITY, VENTURE CAPITAL AND ASSET ACQUISITIONS

As of July 2023, a total of 22 Private Equity transactions have been recorded for US$ 220 million, representing a 19% decrease in the number of transactions, as well as an 86% decrease in the capital mobilized compared to July of the previous year.

In addition, a total of 61 Venture Capital deals worth US$510 million have been registered up to July, which implies a year-on-year decrease of 42% in the number of transactions and 73% in their value.

In the Asset Acquisitions segment, 35 transactions have been recorded up to July, which represents a 9% increase in the number of deals and a 131% increase in their value, compared to July 2022.

FEATURED TRANSACTION

For July 2023, TTR Data has selected as a notable transaction the one related to Citigroup, which has completed, through Grupo Financiero Banamex and Citi GSCP, the acquisition of Deutsche Bank México from Deutsche Mexico Holdings and Süddeutsche Vermögensverwaltung, subsidiaries of Deutsche Bank.

The transaction was advised by Ritch Mueller; Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton US; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom US; Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aiza y Enríquez; and White & Case US.

FINANCIAL AND LEGAL ADVISORS RANKING

The report publishes the 2023 financial and legal advisory rankings in M&A, Private Equity, Venture Capital and Capital Markets, which report on the activity of the leading firms by number of transactions and by amount.

The TTR ranking of financial advisors, by amount and number of transactions, is led by Banco Santander, with US$ 190 million and 3 advised transactions.

In terms of the ranking of legal advisors, by number of transactions and capital mobilized, Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aiza and Enríquez lead in 2023, with 22 deals and US$ 6.29 billion.
