The Volvo Group project in the municipality of Ciénega de Flores will produce heavy trucks for key markets in North America and Latin America, consolidating the state as a strategic hub for the automotive sector.

On this occasion, it was Volvo Group that made the formal announcement of a 700 million dollar investment in a plant in the state of Nuevo León, focused on the production of heavy vehicles for Volvo and Mack, as had been announced on April 11.

The plant will complement the group's production in the United States and provide additional capacity to support Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks' growth plans in the U.S. and Canadian markets, as well as new Mack truck sales in Mexico and Latin America.

The shipyard is expected to be operational in 2026, according to a statement from its headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden.

In an interview request sent to John Mies, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at Volvo Group North America, he was asked what the key factors were that influenced the decision to choose Nuevo Leon as the plant location. In response, he commented: "I hope you've already seen the attached press release, which answers your first two questions."

The statement said: “Monterrey offers significant logistical efficiencies to support sales in the southwestern and eastern regions of the United States, as well as in Mexico and Latin America. Given its proximity to the US market and its well-developed infrastructure, the group considers Monterrey to be an ideal location to create a mature supply and production ecosystem.”

It also confirmed that GP Group has sold the land for the project. In its April 11 statement, Volvo said the site would be 1.7 million square feet (157,935 square meters).

The governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, reported this Friday, August 23—after the official announcement by Volvo Group through a statement—that on Thursday, August 22, he met with executives of the Swedish automaker, and commented on it in a video that he uploaded to his social networks.

The president confirmed that the plant will be installed in the municipality of Ciénega de Flores, but noted that it will be the company that will provide more details about the investment.

"Volvo is coming to build its largest factory in the world here in Nuevo León. We are very pleased, it will be one of the largest investments of this administration. We will allow the company to provide details about the location, the size, the thousands of jobs (...) we will leave all that to Volvo. For now, we welcome them to the best state to invest in, which is Nuevo León, Mexico," he said.

Volvo has made four investments in Mexico, one of them in a car and truck manufacturing plant in Tultitlán, State of Mexico, where the units of Line 1 of the Mexibús were assembled.
