The Mexican oil company reported that emergency protocols were immediately activated, as well as the refinery's Emergency Care Center, and local authorities were notified.

Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) confirmed that at 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, an acid gas leak was reported in one of the processing units of the Deer Park refinery, located in Texas, United States.

At least two workers were confirmed dead and five people were injured.

Emergency protocols were immediately activated, as well as the refinery's Emergency Response Center, and local authorities were notified, according to Pemex.

“In order to mitigate the impact proactively, the operation of the coking unit and hydrotreatment units was stopped, and safety vents were carried out, notifying the authorities under the mechanisms indicated in the protocol.”

No impact on the community has been reported. The corresponding investigations are being carried out to determine the causes of the accident and work is being done to reactivate the facilities.

In a local report, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said preliminary information indicated a chemical release occurred. It was later confirmed that at least one person died as a result of the incident.

Meanwhile, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo posted on X: "I am aware of the chemical leak at the Pemex plant in Deer Park. At this time, there are reports of at least one death and multiple injuries at the plant, and my heart goes out to their families and loved ones. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office and Harris County Pollution Control Services are on scene to assist and monitor the air."

“Our Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is ready for any additional assistance that is requested. Our primary concern is to ensure that the leak has been stopped and that the leaked materials do not impact county residents. We will send further updates as we receive them.”

At the same time, the Pasadena city authority said on social media that a hydrogen sulfide release occurred at the facility and that the Pasadena Fire Department had issued a shelter-in-place for all areas north of Spencer Highway in the Pasadena city limits. However, the lockdown in Pasadena has been lifted.

In any case, the city of Deer Park set up a shelter for all residents of the town.
