The Mexican president's response comes a day after Donald Trump promised that he would change the name when he comes to power.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday morning that the name Gulf of Mexico is recognized by the United Nations, a day after US President-elect Donald Trump promised that when he comes to power he will call the area shared by both countries the Gulf of Mexico.
For his part, the political advisor of the Social Communication Coordination of the Presidency, José Alfonso Suárez del Real, wrote a report on the geography of Mexico on maps. A world map from 1607 shows that, since then, the Gulf of Mexico and the North American region were recognized as “Mexican America,” to which the first president proposed returning that name to the region.
Trump said Tuesday he would like to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America" when he takes office in two weeks.
"We're going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a nice sound. It's appropriate. And Mexico has to stop letting millions of people into our country," the future president said at a press conference.
