The National Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) expressed its “profound disagreement” with the Trump administration’s unilateral decision to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican steel exports.
The National Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) on Tuesday called for retaliation against steel imports from the United States, in response to the order of US President Donald Trump to impose a general tariff of 25% on steel and aluminum imports.
"The Mexican steel industry rejects the imposition of tariffs by the United States and requests retaliation on steel products if an exclusion for Mexico is not achieved," Canacero said in a press release.
The Chamber expressed its “profound disagreement” with the unilateral decision of the United States Government to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican steel exports, arguing that this measure will seriously affect the steel industry and the entire metalworking chain in North America, putting competitiveness and regional integration at risk.
“The steel trade balance between the two countries reflects a surplus of 2.3 million tons in favor of the United States at the end of 2024, so there is no justification for imposing tariffs on Mexican steel,” he said.
Canacero indicated that the Mexican steel industry supports the efforts of the Mexican government to ensure that “economic reasoning” prevails and achieve the definitive exclusion of Mexico from the Executive Order recently communicated by the United States government.
"The high level of productive integration between both countries and regional benefits must be a priority in the face of the threat of excess capacity in China and Southeast Asia," he added.
In response to this unilateral decision, Canacero urged the Mexican government to take urgent trade defense measures to protect the national industry.
The tariffs threaten 75% of Mexican steel exports, valued at $2.1 billion.
He concluded that if Mexican steel is not excluded from this measure, it will be necessary to apply reciprocal reprisals on American steel products.
