Claudia Sheinbaum said that her government could make this decision after the company did not respond to her initial complaints.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday that if necessary the government will file a civil suit against Google for changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America (United States), after reporting that the company did not address the Latin American country's initial complaints.

The president said in late January that she would send a letter to Alphabet Inc.'s Google after the company said it would use the name Gulf of America for Google Maps users in the United States, following the imposition of the new designation by Donald Trump, which Mexico rejects.

"They have already answered the letter and we have already answered them again. And if necessary, we will file a civil suit," Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference, without offering further details. "We hope they do a review," she added.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sheinbaum and Trump have disagreed over changing the name of the Gulf, with the president previously joking that if countries were starting to vary names then perhaps North America should be called "Mexican America," like on a 17th-century map of the region.

According to Mexico, the United States cannot legally change the name of the gulf because the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea establishes that a country's sovereign territory extends only up to 12 nautical miles (about 22 kilometers) from the coastline.
