From this Wednesday, March 26, to next Sunday, March 30, Chile will host the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IDB Invest).
The Boards of Governors are the highest authority of the IDB and IDB Invest. Most of the governors are finance ministers, economy ministers, or central bank presidents from their countries. The Annual Meetings are held each year in a member country. The last meeting was held in Chile in 2001.
During the event, economic and financial leaders from the 48 IDB member countries will discuss the challenges and opportunities for development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Between 4,000 and 5,000 people are mobilized for this event, including some 2,000 who come to the country from abroad, boosting the host country's economic and tourism activity.
The meetings will be held in Santiago, Chile, while thematic activities will be held in Punta Arenas for regional authorities and national and international investors.
The objective of holding part of the event in Punta Arenas is to highlight the public efforts underway in productive and territorial transformation to address climate change, as well as sustainable investment opportunities in the Magallanes region and the use of new technologies to address emerging challenges.
Chilean Finance Minister Mario Marcel highlighted the opportunities presented by events like this, as "the IDB brings together specialists, economists, civil society representatives, and investment banks, in addition to the highest authorities of the member countries."
He also stated that, in addition to Santiago, "this is the first time that an IDB meeting will be held in a location as southern as Punta Arenas, which will also help highlight the full scope of Chilean Patagonia."
