U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will travel to Buenos Aires next Monday, April 14, to meet with members of Javier Milei's administration and representatives of the private sector to reaffirm "the United States' full support for Argentina's bold economic reforms."
This was announced by the Department of the Treasury in a statement on Thursday, explaining that Bessent will meet with President Javier Milei and the country's Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, as well as with other members of the Argentine government and business community.
During his meetings in Argentina, Secretary Bessent will reiterate the United States' strong support for the continued implementation of President Milei's robust economic agenda and encourage the international community to fully support his economic reform initiatives.
"Thanks to the bold leadership of President Javier Milei, the relationship between the United States and Argentina is stronger than ever. I look forward to our positive discussions on the Argentine economy and exploring ways our nations can further deepen our vital economic relationship," the Secretary said.
This meeting will take place within the framework of the recent approval by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of a $20 billion (more than €18.5 billion) rescue package.
The program seeks to support the next phase of Argentina's stabilization and reform agenda, which aims to strengthen macroeconomic stability, bolster external sustainability, and unleash strong and more sustainable growth, while managing a more challenging global environment.
Furthermore, the visit is expected to address the global tariffs imposed by the United States, which include a 10% rate on Argentina, as well as tariffs on steel, aluminum, and the country's automotive industry.
