Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has explained that the Ministries of Economy and Finance are preparing a report on the benefits for the United States economy of the presence of Mexicans in the country and the advantages of the free trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada.
This document, which the president said is "very advanced," will be presented to Donald Trump's government during the first high-level meeting between the two leaders, before or after his inauguration on January 21.
The aim of this work is to demonstrate with information the benefits for the United States of the "extraordinary" work of Mexicans in the neighboring country, in the context of Trump's rise to power, who has threatened to implement a less open trade policy and apply harsh immigration laws.
The text will also serve to provide "key figures" for the review of the free trade agreement between the two countries and Canada, which is due to take place in 2026, and for any tariffs that the new administration may wish to impose.
"It benefits Mexico, but it also benefits the United States a lot," Sheinbaum said at her morning press conference on Wednesday, in which she said she wanted to show Trump Mexico's progress in immigration, fentanyl and the economic area.
The integration of both economies is another of the axes that the Sheinbaum Government is betting on to defend the maintenance of free trade and avoid high tariffs.
In line with the arguments of her Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, the president explained that many of the exports to the United States are of automobile parts, which are key to the production of vehicles in this country.
