The Chilean president confirmed that he has communicated with his counterparts in Mexico, Panama and France on the matter, reporting that possible tariffs on copper by the United States are being evaluated.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has described the tariff decisions of US President Donald Trump as “untimely” and could have consequences for the southern country.

Specifically, during the visit of the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to Chile, Boric was asked about Trump's so-called "trade war", who has decided to impose tariffs on various raw materials, including copper.

"It is an extremely delicate issue and we have said in all forums that we believe in multilateralism and not, as President Steinmeier said, in unilateral decisions where the law of the strongest is intended to prevail," Boric said.

The head of state confirmed that he has communicated with the presidents of Mexico, Panama and France on this matter, reporting that possible tariffs on copper by the United States are being evaluated.

"I asked both the Foreign Ministry and the Treasury to form a study team together with the Chilean embassy in the United States - and it has already been formed - to evaluate the alternatives with the scenarios we have now," he said.

"In any case, Chile has the duty to anticipate, because we have seen how untimely decisions can be in the northern country during this mandate," he warned.

DECISIONS IN AGRICULTURE AND BORIC'S TRIP TO INDIA

Boric also said that he had asked the Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, to "form a team with the Foreign Ministry (…) to evaluate the possible scenarios regarding the export of fruit and food that we have to the United States."

“I am particularly concerned about the situation regarding the systems approach to grapes, which was something we worked on for a long time and which we finally managed to get through under the previous administration,” he added.

The president said that "we do not believe in trade wars, we do not believe that they are the way to solve relations between countries," stating that although Chile "is not directly threatened, we believe that the necessary precautions must be taken."

The President concluded that they will seek to “continue diversifying our export basket,” which is the reason for his trip to India at the beginning of April.

"So we are taking the necessary measures. You can rest assured that Chile's foreign policy is a State policy and I hope that all political sectors are on the same page. Supporting the State of Chile in the decisions that are being made," he concluded.
