On April 2, the United States imposed a 10% tariff on Ecuadorian imports, as it did on other Latin American countries.

The Plenary Session of Ecuador's Foreign Trade Committee (Comex) issued a new resolution this Wednesday, April 9, to temporarily reduce the tariff on vehicle imports from the United States.

Thus, tariffs would be reduced to 10% until December 31, 2025, for imports of light vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks), light, medium, and heavy trucks, vans, light trucks, and buses. The measure will take effect on Thursday, April 10.

On April 2, the United States imposed a 10% tariff on Ecuadorian imports, as it did on other Latin American countries.

At a meeting of the Mexican Trade and Investment Commission (COMEX) on Tuesday, April 8, the technical report containing the temporary tariff reduction proposal submitted by the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment, and Fisheries (MPCEIP) was reviewed and approved.

This report states: “(…) Given the imposition of a general tariff of 10% by the United States on imports from Ecuador starting April 5, 2025, it is recommended that the full COMEX, based on the information presented in this report, evaluate and decide on the appropriateness of reducing the tariffs on the tariff subheadings listed in Annex 1 for products originating in the United States to 10%, which is the reciprocal global tariff applied by the United States until December 31, 2025.”

One of the motivations for this decision is to "preserve a stable and mutually beneficial trade relationship with the United States, Ecuador's main trading partner."

Furthermore, "in accordance with the principles of openness enshrined in the country's trade policy, it is considered strategic to implement a temporary measure that constitutes a positive signal of economic cooperation and willingness to engage in dialogue."

To qualify for the benefit, imports must be accompanied by a certificate proving the vehicles' origin in the United States.
