Ecuador only accounts for 0.2% of Mexico's imports, a small figure compared to other countries such as the United States.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has downplayed the economic impact of Ecuador's 27% tariffs on Mexican exports amid a trade crisis that has erupted between several countries on the continent in recent days.

Specifically, the president referred to the total number of imports from Ecuador to Mexico to measure the consequences of this measure promulgated last Monday by the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa.

According to the figures he has compared, Ecuador only accounts for 0.2% of Mexico's imports, a small figure compared to other countries such as the United States, where the dispute is now at its centre following the latest events with Trump.

"Shrimp from Sinaloa is tastier than shrimp from Ecuador," Sheinbaum joked, to downplay the issue of tariffs from the South American country.

Noboa has argued that this decision to impose tariffs will be maintained at least until a free trade agreement is signed between Ecuador and Mexico.

The president justified himself on the grounds of alleged "abuse" in trade relations between the two countries.

"As we have demonstrated in recent days, the New Ecuador has always been open to trade integration, but not when there is abuse," he denounced.
