It is worth mentioning that the first stage of the Chancay mega port in Peru alone would have an annual operating capacity of 1 million containers.
In the context of the imminent inauguration of the mega port of Chancay in Peru, which will be attended by the leader of China, Xi Jinping, academics emphasized the need for the ports of San Antonio and Valparaíso to remain competitive.
Specifically, this initiative will have an initial investment of US$ 1.3 billion, which could reach US$ 4 billion, with a large capacity to receive ships. That is, 10 docking sites and an area of more than 800 hectares, with areas for railroads.
In this regard, Andrés Orrego, a specialist in the field and director of the Portal Portuario platform, commented that although Chile has the advantage of having its own cargo, in order to remain competitive it is imperative to develop the ports of Valparaíso and San Antonio.
Meanwhile, Leopoldo Santibáñez, professor at the School of Construction and Transportation Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, emphasized that Peru has been working on this idea for more than 10 years. Therefore, it is not only important to be up to the task through investment, but also through the State.
It is worth mentioning that the first stage of the Chancay mega port alone would have an annual operating capacity of 1 million containers.
Currently, the two main terminals of the Port of San Antonio have a capacity of close to 2 million, which is similar to that of the two terminals of the Port of Callao in Peru.
