The White House said the US president is open to hearing about additional tariff exemptions.

The White House said Wednesday that auto imports from Canada and Mexico will be exempt from tariffs for one month. It also said President Donald Trump is open to hearing about additional tariff exemptions.

U.S. officials have spoken to Stellantis, Ford and General Motors, spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said.

"We are going to give them a one-month exemption for vehicles entering under the USMCA," the North American Free Trade Agreement, "so that they do not suffer economic disadvantages," Leavitt explained at a press conference.

Trump spoke by phone with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday.

According to the Republican magnate, Ottawa's progress in reducing fentanyl trafficking is "not good enough" to justify the reduction of tariffs imposed on Canadian and Mexican products on Tuesday.

On his social network, Truth Social said the conversation was "quite friendly," but that didn't stop him from harshly criticizing Trudeau.

Trump was considering exempting automotive companies from tariffs imposed on Mexico and Canada, according to sources consulted by Reuters.

The agency reported that Trump was considering granting relief from his 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico for products that comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), including the automotive industry.

These sources said that the talks are aimed at exemptions for companies that comply with the USMCA rules of origin.

Two automaker sources told Reuters one scenario would require a 30-day exemption from tariffs, but automakers would have to demonstrate plans to invest more in U.S. auto production to remain exempt.

But this delay is at odds with remarks made by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday, when he said: “It’s not going to be a pause, none of that pause stuff. But I think he’s going to understand that ‘do more and I’ll meet you in the middle somehow.’ And we’ll probably announce that tomorrow.”

The agency also reported that Trump met on Tuesday with the CEOs of General Motors and Ford and the president of Stellantis to discuss the possibility of delaying tariffs on vehicles manufactured in North America for 30 days.

Automakers have offered to boost U.S. auto investment but want certainty on tariff and environmental policies, Reuters sources added, noting that Trump could impose additional tariffs on April 2 that could hit U.S. auto production.
