The measure by Mark Carney's government will take effect tonight.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that the 25% tariff on U.S.-made vehicles that don't meet the specifications of the USMCA, the treaty the two sides maintain with Mexico, will take effect tonight.

"There will be 25% tariffs on all non-USMCA-compliant vehicles from the United States, as well as 25% levies on the content of USMCA-compliant vehicles not originating in Canada or Mexico. President Trump caused this trade crisis, and Canada is responding with purpose and force," Carney said in a post on 'X'.

While Canada sidestepped the tariffs of at least 10% that Trump imposed on virtually everyone on April 2, the 25% tariffs on the automobile sector that were already in effect are a completely different matter.

"Canada will respond to the auto tariffs [...] by matching them to 25% on all vehicles imported from the United States that do not comply with the North American Free Trade Agreement," Carney announced to the media shortly afterward.

These tariffs, unlike those imposed in the United States, will not affect parts and components used in car manufacturing. Furthermore, Ottawa is developing a plan to ensure that companies are not affected and can continue their operations and investments in Canada.

Carney noted that Canada was taking these measures "reluctantly," but with "foresight" in order to have "maximum impact on the United States and minimum impact on Canada." He also clarified that they would not affect agreements with Mexico.
