Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau does not agree with withdrawing Mexico from the Mexico-United States-Canada Free Trade Agreement, despite requests from some Canadian provincial premiers.

In her morning press conference, the president framed these comments in the context of the electoral process that will take place next year in Canada, in which this issue is used as part of the campaign, but she insisted that Trudeau "does not agree."

"He does not agree with removing Mexico from the treaty," he told me very clearly. "We have agreed to continue the dialogue," said Sheinbaum after her visit to Brazil this week, where she met with Trudeau and the President of the United States, Joe Biden, in the framework of the G20 summit.

He also recalled that former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was the one who defended Canada's inclusion in the treaty, since at that time it was Donald Trump, in his previous term, who was advocating for an agreement between Mexico and the United States.

"It seems that it is only a benefit for Mexico, but the United States has great benefits, and so does Canada," said Sheinbaum, who said that "going forward" there is a lot of data that encourages maintaining the treaty and, in 2026, proceeding to its review, as was agreed at the time.

One of the arguments of some leaders, such as the Premier of Ontario, is that Mexico has become the "back door" for Chinese products to enter the North American continent. "I will not let myself be sunk by these cheap imports that take away the jobs of men and women in Ontario," he said.

In this regard, Sheinbaum explained that she informed Trudeau about the production plants of a Chinese automobile company, which she did not want to name, and clarified that there are no factories of this brand in Mexican territory.
